In Love with the Word of God

This last weekend we had a chance to spend time with our extended family in Pennsylvania. We had a wonderful time celebrating my grandfather’s 80th birthday. We stayed at my uncle’s house. He purchased a large arsenal of fireworks for our enjoyment. He and my 14 year old son, Joel, set them off, usually 3 at a time. They exploded with loud bangs and pops; shooting blues, greens, whites, and reds into the night sky. My daughter, Hattie Jo, is 4 1/2 years old. She curled up on my lap, amazed at the scene before her. She laughed and clapped, wide-eyed, at the beautiful display.

Recently I spoke at the teen camp where a youth pastor said this; “Rachel is passionately in love with the word of God.” It may be the most wonderful compliment I have ever received. You see the Bible is this beautiful display of God’s love, history, hope, power, promise, to each of us. It is not like other books that simply give us enjoyment, “for the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow” (Hebrews 4:12). Like the fireworks, God’s Word should give us joy, amaze us with it’s beauty, and shock us as it speaks.

May this week, as you seek to get into the word of God, may His word get into you; may it bring light, life, enjoyment, and beauty.
